Different cultures come together to create a new culture
Moire Hotel Yoshiwara is a hotel and café situated in Tokyo's Senzoku district. Formerly known as Yoshiwara, this area was one of Japan’s most renowned red-light districts during the Edo period. Moiré, derived from the Moiré Pattern (where two different patterns are overlapped), strives to offer its patrons a unique blend of the current local culture along side the historic atmosphere from the districts past.

problem
Fulfill the clients desire to create a place where different cultures come together to create new cultures, regardless of ethnicity or sexual orientation.
solution
The hotel rooms where split into a light and a dark theme as a nod to the name Moire. The cafe and bar area was designed to be able to host a multitude of events from cabaret girls, DJ's, to traditional comedy shows and everything in-between.
process
This project involved a lot of close work with the construction workers and a multitude of custom pieces that where created in collaboration with local artists. The design process included everything from the furniture, lighting, and amenities to food and drink design.
My main responsibility was producing rapid turnaround renders for each iteration. Typically created within one to two days. These renders where used to help the client visualize different options.
All modeling and rendering was done in SolidWorks.
One of the key aspects to achieving the clients vision is in the details.
Each room has a unique subtly erotic name embroidered onto a fabric Nameplate. The fabric, also used for the throw blankets, and headboards reflects the style once worn by geisha and courtesans during the Edo period.
